Frida respectfully rejected being categorized as a Surrealist. She said she did not paint her dreams, but her reality. Hospitalization and the loss a child were reoccurring themes in her work. Her injuries left it difficult to bring children to term but also difficult to think about having them. She suffered miscarriages and abortions.
